How international road freight cost is calculated
A freight price is not a fixed tariff from a table but a calculation for a specific cargo and route. Let's break down what it consists of.
Understanding the price factors helps plan a budget and compare offers. Here are the main parameters that affect the final cost.
Route and load type
The price base is set by distance, direction and whether you take a whole truck (FTL) or pay for part of the volume in a groupage load (LTL). Direction also matters because of return loads: if little cargo goes to a region, the empty run is priced in.
Volume, weight and vehicle type
Either the used volume and loading metres or the weight is counted — whichever is greater. Vehicle requirements matter: tilt, reefer, isotherm, oversized or ADR — each specificity affects the rate.
Additional factors
The price is also affected by seasonality and market load, urgency, customs procedures, insurance and special loading/unloading conditions. A transparent quote shows these components with no hidden surcharges.
